The wonderful writer Binyavanga Wainaina has died at the age of 48. His memoir, One Day I Will Write About This Place, is a brilliant, personal work that, after getting selected for Oprah’s Book Club, brought Binyavanga well-deserved international attention. In 2011, when I was in Kenya researching my novel, Busara Road, I visited with the folks at Kwani?, the collective and magazine in Nairobi that he founded. His spirit infused the place, and I was very moved by the power of his legacy. As both a person and a writer, Binyavanga was abundantly talented and courageous. He has been a true inspiration for me, and I am greatly saddened by the news of his passing.
